The Visit With Jean Of Dross Into Gold

A few weeks ago Mr. J and I traveled to Atlanta where he was presenting at a conference. It was my first time in this beautiful city and I had the good fortune of visiting my gorgeous and talented friend, blogger and voice over artist Jean of Dross Into Gold HERE (on Instagram).  As I've mentioned before on Style Crone, Jean was the first blogger that I met shortly after launching my blog in 2011. As we walked through Jean's home, where she lives with her musician husband Joey, filled with art and the garments that she has upcycled

The Collaboration With Two Sole Sisters

Have you ever walked into a store and had the feeling that you were in a special space? That you were surrounded by beauty and a sense of wonder?  A store that felt like a gallery, yet warm, welcoming, and inviting? This is what happened when I entered Two Sole Sisters HERE , a shoe boutique with locations in Denver's Washington Park area and in Boulder. Owned by sisters Lindsey and Laurel Tate, the store is a reflection of their creativity and dedication.  I believe that I've found two women who are as passionate about shoes as I am

Brooks LTD At The Maven Hotel

Recently I was part of a photo shoot featuring the designs created by my friend Brooks Luby HERE, Denver fashion designer extraordinaire.  The shoot took place at the Maven Hotel  HERE, which promotes Colorado artists. The definition of the word "maven" is someone who is skilled in a particular field, often crafting handmade items. This term describes Brooks to perfection and she chose the ideal location to highlight her latest designs. It was a privilege and honor to work with the beautiful model Mallory High.  In the above photo we are wearing Brooks' lifestyle mesh tops, which come in mocha, navy, or

Hat Attack #58 – Alexandra Harper Millinery London

May's Hat Attack is the spearmint ostrich feather explosion by Alexandra Harper Millinery London HERE.  I love how the feathers cascade from the headband and softly caress my face.  Feathers and the flowers at Union Station Denver HERE somehow bloom together. With this post I'm excited to reveal Style Crone's new look.  After blogging for almost eight years, an update was long overdue. This is a step forward and represents a commitment to continue.  Thank you to all followers and those of you who comment on Style Crone.  I am deeply grateful! Mom 1920-2018

My 97-year-old mother Norma transitioned two weeks ago, just short of her 98th birthday.  The photo above was published on Style Crone during a visit a few years ago.  She will be greatly missed by many for her resilience, intelligence and inspirational approach to life. She was fiercely independent since my father died 22 years ago, and could never resist a good game of bridge. She approached aging with a positive mindset and was an inspiration for everyone that she knew.  She had friends of all ages, and was especially fond of her 17 grandchildren. Mom in 1938 at the

Hat Attack #57

April's Hat Attack is a wide-brimmed purple fur felt chapeau trimmed with feathers, which was originally gifted to my hat shop partner's mother Doris during the days of our hat shop in the 1980's.  She wore it frequently, and after she died, my hat shop partner Mary Lou was seen wearing this beauty out and about in Denver. When Mary Lou died about nine years ago, this purple beauty was passed on to me. Since then, this hat has been perched in my hat room, on one of the higher hanging racks on the south wall, as though it were

The Field of Daffodils

Spring has arrived at the Denver Botanic Gardens HERE, as evidenced by the extensive field of daffodils which greets passers-by on the periphery near the entrance. The Gardens have been providing backgrounds for my photos intermittently over the almost eight years that I've been blogging. I was thinking about these daffodils when I chose this yellow felt structured beret, created by milliner Mademoiselle Slassi HERE,as a punctuation mark to my green, black and white plaid jacket trimmed with orange and white buttons. It's transition time in the hat room, which takes several weeks to complete. During this seasonal change, I

Monochromatic In The Park

This monochromatic composition has been waiting in the wings for the snow that I knew was inevitable. The month of March is typically the Front Range of Colorado's snowiest month of the year. Sure enough!  A white carpet greeted me on the morning before the first day of spring. It was the perfect day to walk the short block to City Park dressed in white and cream. There's something about snow in the spring that lifts my spirits. It feels clean and refreshing, as though the earth is setting the stage for new beginnings. I can feel it in the air.

75 And Feeling Alive

Today is my 75th birthday.  The Ides of March.  I've been thinking about the birthday posts that I've done in the past over the years.  I have never gone back to read previous posts since I began Style Crone on July 13th, 2010. I've always moved forward, never looking back. Today I did the unimaginable and did just that. I pulled up my very first post. The photo that I published was taken on my 67th birthday, though it was actually July when I launched Style Crone.  At some point I would love to take the time to revisit all

An Ode To Francis McDormand And Inclusion

I admire Francis McDormand and was thrilled that she received the best actress award at the 2018 Oscars for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.  The fact that she closed her acceptance speech with a call for inclusion only strengthened my respect and high regard for her. I can only hope that this concept of inclusion spreads across all industries, communities, and organizations across the planet, treasuring diversity as the norm. I composed my ensemble for this post in honor of the wonder of films and the cinema. My vintage silver lame gown trimmed with ostrich feathers and accessorized

Hat Attack #56

The Hat Attack for March is a dark brown fur felt confection trimmed with feathers by milliner Jennifer Hoertz HERE.  I discovered this beauty at The Hat Shop NYC HERE about 18 years ago.  I love how the feathers cascade from the hat and frame the face.  It plays nicely with my faux fur-trimmed vintage cape. I've become discouraged with maintaining the Hat Attack link-up. Participation has decreased and I haven't put the energy into keeping it alive. Hat Attack is on life support!  I have several ideas to pursue to move forward, but I have considered publishing a monthly Hat

A Dandy On South Broadway

This vintage black and white English tweed suit belonged to my dear friend Tom who I shared an antique booth with in the 1990's.  Every weekend we would enjoy the wonderful world of estate sales.  He was looking for sheet music and I was focusing on vintage and hats. It was an interesting combination for the booth, but it is also a very rich and special piece of my history. Tom no longer wore the suit, and asked me if I was interested in claiming it and giving it a new life.  I was and I did.  I had it

The Collaboration With INDEN EST.1582 Bags And Accessories

It was the middle of January when I received an email from a Japanese leather bag and accessories company by the name of INDEN EST.1582. HERE They were inquiring about a possible collaboration with their brand, and as I visited their website, I realized that to have been contacted by this high quality company was truly an honor. I said "yes" without hesitation. INDEN is a highly popular brand widely known in Japan. Inden’s products are manufactured with a unique, 400-year-old technique of applying lacquer over deerskin. Their patterns are made of washi papers and all the complex designs are made by hand.

Vintage And Street Art

It was a cold and sunny day in the River North area of Denver. Snow had fallen the day before we traveled to this changing neighborhood of artists, restaurants and new development. Additions to the vibrant street art appear daily, and it's always a visual surprise from one week to the next. I chose a combination of rust and wine as my colors for the day. I threw on my favorite multicolored felted scarf, which incorporated and added to my sartorial display. As I approach my 75th birthday I feel a sense of confusion and hesitation. Where do I want

Hat Attack #55 – Sukhinina Vera

February's Hat Attack is a silk turban by Sukhinina Vera from Moscow, Russia HERE. I met Sukhinina on Instagram and last week I received her glorious creation just in time for this month's feature. I love its mix of patterns and colors and the silhouette it portrays from every angle. Sometimes I wear a turban positioned as a crown for height and the variation of shape. The versatility of headwear is limitless and I was in a playful mood. I was inspired by the luxurious cascade of silk and its intricate folds. This gorgeous turban will have its first outing this

Resilience And The Leopard Print Muff

The definition of resilience is an ability to recover from or adjust to misfortune or change. I view resilience as one of the key qualities to embrace as I age.  Every week brings change, some small and some overwhelming. "I can't do anything about it, so I'm moving forward," is a phrase that runs through my thoughts frequently as the weeks, months and years unfold.. The muff, which hasn't had resilience as an accessory choice over the years, is a thick, tubular case for the hands, covered with fur or other material, used by women for warmth and as a handbag.   It was

Common Threads Consignment: Neon And More

As mentioned in my last post, I am a fan of the Seventh Generation Principle, which is based on an ancient Iroquois philosophy that the decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future HERE. The Rhinestone Jacket

I discovered this rhinestone jacket at a thrift shop many years ago. The label reads STAVROPOULOS (New York, Athens) HERE and it is extremely well made.  I paid $25 for this beauty and it will remain a permanent piece in my collection, providing me much pleasure whenever I want to "shine." It's the perfect New Year's Eve outfit, and it accompanied me into 2018 at two parties that I attended with Mr. J.  When worn during the day, as seen in these photos, its sparkles dance off the jacket in the sunlight. It's like wearing a disco ball! It can be

Hat Attack #54

January's Hat Attack is a vintage black draped fabric turban embellished with a sparkling rhinestone pin.  I discovered this New Year's crown in a Minneapolis vintage store this past year.  I can't think of a better way to celebrate 2018 than with my love for vintage and turbans. There is nothing that makes me feel like dancing more than headwear and having fun with Daniel to a rhythm and blues beat.  I'm hoping to up my "Hat Attack" game in the new year.  Let's see what this fresh energy brings forward as I mediate on new intentions. I wish all

The Silver Gown And The Habit Of Style

Sometimes the holidays make me sad. It's the time of year for great expectations and festive gatherings. There is subtle pressure to be joyful and happy.  Or so it seems. Memories of holidays past tend to flood my thoughts and I can feel as though I'm walking through honey.  Just when I need my energy to surge, it fails me.  Though it's important to accept and honor my thoughts and feelings, I view them as temporary. Thus I find myself longing for an opening of the unbound heart. Enter the vintage silver gown and the discipline of blogging.  How could
