In NYC With Advanced Style

Photo By Ari Seth Cohen It was a thrill to meetup with the brilliant Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style HERE and Debra Rapoport, artist, hat maker extraordinaire and regular on Ari's blog.  I was honored to have this photo appear on Advanced Style HERE several weeks ago. Mr J and I had great fun roaming the streets of the Upper West Side with these two creative, warm, accomplished and interesting people. Photo By Ari Seth Cohen The last time that I saw Ari and Debra in NYC, Debra and I applied lipstick after lunch. I think it's become a ritual,

The Idiosyncratic Fashionistas And The Frida Kahlo Exhibit

My glorious trip to NYC began with the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas, a visit to The New York Botanical Gardens HERE in the Bronx  and The Freda Kahlo Exhibit: Art - Garden - Life HERE.  Jean and Valerie have blogged about our adventure HERE, with a beautifully written and detailed post which includes more photos of tropical beauty, information on exhibit features which we didn't have time to visit and images of additional Frida inspired outfits worn by garden visitors. Valerie, on the left, and Jean, on the right, frame Frida perfectly in their creative ensembles of the day. Valerie wore a deep orange Ivan

A Tribute to Lyn Dell, The Countess Of Glamour

I've been home from NYC for a week now, and have been reviewing photos and preparing posts about my adventures. However, I found that I was unable to move forward without devoting today's post to Lynn Dell, The Countess of Glamour.  Her story became a part of the trip because I learned of her hospitalization during the time that I spent in the "city of dreams."  By the time I returned home she was gone. It was a surprise to me because she seemed invincible.  But I have come to know that disbelief lies in wake when a beloved soul

Black On Black With Navy

As I write this post I'm in NYC enjoying every moment in real time.  I'm traveling with Mr. J, visiting friends and enjoying the "City Of Dreams," always looking for a great hat.  Today's photos were taken at Heather Stoten's magical Millinery Workshop HERE during the time that she was creating my hat for Camille's wedding. This hat is dark navy made from a paribuntal straw brim and dyed banana fiber crown with feather trim.  I wore it with a background of several shades of black. The second piece of headwear is a cloche draped with spotted tulle trimmed with

Taxi: Part 2, Traveling Outward

Taxi: Part 2 displays more of the colorful backgrounds encountered by Daniel and myself as we traveled through its spaces HERE over a month ago HERE. The photos in this post portray a focus outward, which is how I feel after the intensity of the wedding preparations and the celebration itself. My energy has been released to create the next phase of my life.  The wedding ritual allowed me to comprehend my daughter's growth, to view her increasing competence and generosity of heart, and to see her ability to own an event which reflected her personality and her exquisite taste.  I am in

The Wedding

My beloved daughter Camille and her now husband Sean were married last weekend. Everything about the event was magical and celebratory.  I am grateful to welcome my impressive and accomplished son-in-law into our family. The floral headpiece by Heather Stoten Millinery HERE captured the essence of the event. I proudly walked Camille down the aisle.  She was a vision in her white silk wedding dress created by her friend Tess of 50 Dresses HERE.  I've never seen her more radiant and happy. My suit was created by the talented Denver designer Rachel Marie Hurst HERE and my headwear was by Heather Stoten

The Bridal Shower

Camille's bridal shower was held recently at my home.  Her friends and I collaborated on the event, and a fabulous time was had by all.  I am thrilled to see my daughter radiant, happy, excited and in love with a man who supports and adores her.  Her dazzling smile and deeply expressive brown eyes display her inner glow! My beloved daughter adorned her curls with her shower gift ribbons and bows as headwear in this photo.  She can make any outfit shine!  Camille loves the scent, color and appearance of the lavender plant, and in her honor I decorated the

Taxi: Part 1, Traveling Inward

Daniel and The SC spent an afternoon at Taxi HERE, a mixed-use development in the River North area of Denver which is now a community that fosters the use of creative spaces for living, working and playing. As you can see in the signage above, there is much to do at Taxi, including dining at the Fuel Cafe HERE, and then strolling through the community garden followed by an espresso at Black Black Coffee HERE.  We wandered through an office building, taking photos with colorful walls and interesting spaces as background. Coming up on the fourth anniversary of Nelson's death, memories

Old Is The New Black

I recently received my "Old Is The New Black" t-shirt, a creative collaboration between blogger, film maker and author Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style HERE and designer and creator of The Old Ladies Rebellion, Fanny Karst HERE.  I'm finding that this glorious garment is very versatile and can be worn in many settings. "Old Is The New Black" is playful enough to wear out to dinner with friends with: coral estate sale vintage jacket, consignment shop black platform heels and coral chapeau with black trim from a Paris hat shop. "Old Is The New Black" is chic enough to

The Cartier Exhibit

Several weeks ago a dear friend whisked me away to the Cartier Exhibit at the Denver Art Museum in celebration of my birthday.  I appreciate the gift of time with loved ones, which is priceless and treasured more than precious stones. The chill of the day called for layers, but the experience was warm and compelling. I threw on my gifted blue Fluevog booties, Paris skinny jeans, street market scarf, retail sale blue sweater tunic, and royal blue fabric cloche trimmed with marabou feathers from a hat shop in Nice, and off to the museum we went. STYLE FOREVER by Alyson Walsh: A Book Review

I seldom read fashion books, but when I learned that Alyson Walsh had written Style Forever HERE, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.  After all, I have been following her inspirational and highly entertaining blog That's Not My Age HERE for years.  I had the pleasure of meeting Alyson in NYC over a year ago, and found her to be kind, witty and even more beautiful in person.  I wanted to know what she had to say! When I met Alyson, she was wearing the vintage faux fur leopard coat that she refers to in her book as

72

Today I transition to the age of 72, and I'm savoring every minute of this era.  I'm floating through it, treasuring it, feeling it with every breath that I take and release. I'm awake and alive and deeply engaged with the life that has been given me. The cubist bust form composed of hard plastic resin and developed for use in a retail environment by Nanasai Japan for Greneker was my companion for this photo taken at Mod Livin' HERE.  I was attracted to its shape and how it dwells in space with confidence. I'm filled with wonder and amazement

“Shoe And Tell” And The Gown Series: #4

I'm delighted to be co-hosting Shoe and Tell with the gorgeous Cherie at Style Nudge HERE.  Cherie is a self described "stylist and life long collector of unique things." It was an honor to be asked to contribute to her link-up featuring shoes, which are nearly as important to me as hats. What better way to celebrate this event than traveling to Mod Livin' HERE for another afternoon of photos.  There are an unlimited number of background opportunities at this location that have been spinning around in our brains since last week.  How could I forget this sculptural ceramic planter

The Red Chair

Newsflash!  Daniel has recently become the freelance photographer for Mod Livin' HERE , "the Rocky Mountain region's premier outlet for contemporary and modern furniture designs and mid-century furniture and accessories." This gig evolved from his photography for Style Crone, and he's enjoying the change of pace, finding furniture as interesting as hats.  And outfits.  And poses.   Although furniture is less interactive and doesn't participate in playful bantering. In celebration of his new endeavor and the recognition of his talent, we traveled to Mod Livin' for photographs.  The red chair, or The Diamond Chair by Harry Bertoia HERE, caught our attention,

The Full Face Veil And Old Is Gold

Daniel and The SC embarked on a stealth adventure in search of the perfect background for the hat with the mysterious and theatrical full face veil.  Sometimes asking for permission isn't as much fun as pulling out the camera spontaneously at a moment of opportunity.  We found several locations in a historic hotel located in downtown Denver. I've been attracted to full face veils since the moment that I discovered my first hat adorned with the possibility of looking at the world behind silk netting woven into compelling and delicate patterns.  Contrary to what seems intuitive, facial features appear emphasized

Miami: Part 2 And Sixty & Me

Wherever I land in life, I always seek out hats, whether it be hat shops, milliners or hat makers, vintage shops or street vendors, thrift shops or consignment stores.  I want to be where the hats are!  Sometimes just trying on a hat is enough, as in the case of the photo above taken at Hats and Hats HERE in Miami. I love the color, the shape and the many sides and faces of this large brimmed straw blue and black beauty, but it didn't return home with me.  I will always remember it because of this image; I didn't

Miami: Part 1

The SC and Mr. J spent a week in Miami for a change of pace from the cold Colorado winter.  Today's post begins part one, with "my shadow and me" enjoying the sand beneath my feet and the soft wind blowing off the ocean with a scent that was soothingly sweet. Speaking of sweet, I met up with Patti of Not Dead Yet Style HERE for lunch and animated conversation.  We met for the first time over two years ago, and we took up from where we left off with instant rapport.  Not only is she beautiful, but bright, witty

Photos By Danielle Levitt

Last week I received photos which were taken by Danielle Levitt HERE in NYC over two years ago, for a possible magazine piece.  The images evoked the feelings of excitement which accompanied a day spent with Debra Rapoport, artist, hat designer and woman of many talents. The photo shoot took place in a mansion which was elegantly furnished and used for events and photography.  We spent the morning with hair and make-up artists, and were then photographed together and separately after assistants pulled from racks of eclectic pieces to represent the vision of the stylist. The vintage hat that I wore

Gowns: The Series #3

I've been ill this past week, after many years of life without even a short-lived virus to slow me down.  I have been humbled once again by how quickly life turns on a dime. Not life threatening, but energy draining and immobilizing, it was another reminder of the importance of health and well-being. But the show must go on, and fortunately this post was waiting in the wings for completion prior to my malaise.  Continuing with the gown series, The SC and Daniel headed to the RiNo neighborhood in Denver HERE, knowing that we would find a few spots along
