Style Crone would not exist if not for the photographers that have given of themselves since the day of launching on July 13th, 2010. I would like to honor and pay tribute to each of these collaborators that have enriched my life for years. Blogging is a solitary activity in many ways, and to work with someone who I adore expands my enjoyment and allows me to continue to chronicle my life through style and the written word. It is with deep gratitude that I begin 2015 by thanking those behind The SC lens. I will start with the most
Continuing the gown series, I chose this estate sale 1950's silver satin gown with ribbon pattern and circle skirt, which is one of my all-time favorites. The skirt provides a never-ending source of twirling possibilities. I wore it last year for New Year's Eve and the memories of that festive event are forever ensconced in its luxurious fabric, alongside the unknown secrets that were experienced by this playful piece in the past. This skirt could inhabit two staircases and many lifetimes if given the chance! It's certainly having a new life with me. This season is the time for contemplation
I have a confession to make. I adore gowns. Vintage gowns in silk velvet, silk satin, taffeta, lace, silk chiffon and rayon from the 40's. I've collected them from estate sales since the 70's. I love how they feel and how they move with me when I walk. They give me great pleasure, which is reason enough to wear them whenever possible. I love their textures, details, and unique elegant ways. I think about their past lives and wonder about their adventures. I pair them with small hats and berets, headpieces, or fascinators, as they are usually worn in the
There is a part of yoga that feels like art, or creative self expression within and between each pose. The pieces that I chose to wear only accentuate what already exists for me in my practice. Shavasana, or corpse pose, is the final pose of class, where integration occurs after the body has been active and engaged for an hour. It is the most difficult pose, for to be still requires a meditative mind in a culture that admires productivity. The practice of yoga encourages stretching and reaching beyond boundaries that I may or may not know exist. The rotation
Goddess Pose My love for the practice of yoga was inspiration for today's post. I was planning on photos in my traditional yoga attire, but when collaborating with Daniel, the usual is not the order of the day. He suggested an outfit, and my brain took over from there. Tree I have never practiced in a hat, or in an estate sale vintage black silk chiffon maxi skirt with lace trim accessorized with ruby-red floral embellished satin slippers, vintage clip-on earrings and ruby-red satin belt. One should never say never about "What To Wear To Yoga." Figure Four Yoga provides
The weather suddenly shifted, as The SC and Daniel braved the chill and the beginnings of snow to play at the Pavilion at Cheesman Park HERE. I've blogged about this location in the past, but always during the spring or summer. In the photo above, the snow shows up on my jacket with streaks of white. The roses continue to bloom, but I daresay not for long. Last month I discovered this boiled wool coat and hat in Nice, France. I was strolling with Mr. J on the narrow streets of Old Town HERE, when I spotted hats and a
Last week The SC attended Advanced Style: The Documentary HERE at the SIE Film Center HERE in Denver, along with a crowd of people who had been waiting for this event since the film came out months ago. After touring across the globe, the US opening took place in NYC in September. Having met four of the cast members, I was thrilled to be in the audience for the Denver screening. The stars of the film, from left to right above, are six stunning and stylish NYC women between the ages of 62 and 93 at the time the film was
I've learned that no matter how wonderful the time away from home has been, I greet my sanctuary with a new appreciation for the life that I've created in Denver; my friends and family, both face to face and virtual; the everyday beauty that surrounds me; my yoga practice, my music and my routines; and my expanding feelings of peace with "what is." I feel grounded, and from here my next adventure into the unknown will unfold. I have a new understanding that the journey here in place has its own excitement. Its own thrill. Its own creative energy.
Arriving in Nice by train from Paris, we settled in for a week of endless beauty and rich culture. Old town Nice was a place that would take months to fully discover, with its colorful and magical ways. The Mediterranean Sea stretched into infinity, with landscapes changing along with the weather. The architecture was stunning at every turn. I'm sharing a few photos of the many that I took as we walked through different areas of the city. Ornate balconies frequently caught my uplifted gaze. Another gorgeous cathedral arose from the cityscape as we hopped a tram during an afternoon
My photos do the talking as I go with the flow of adventure! As we walked along the Seine we discovered the "Love Lock Bridge." Since 2008, lovers have attached padlocks to the bridge and tossed the keys ino the Seine, leaving the bridge at risk due to the weight of the locks. Currently there is a campaign to free the bridge of additional padlocks so as not to cause further damage . Taking the train to Versailles provided stunning views along the way. We met a beautiful young woman from Chile who has been traveling the world,
What to write when a dream becomes reality? I will have to reflect upon what it means to me after I'm home. I remain in the midst of the Paris adventure with Mr. J, and inhaling every extraordinary moment. I will let my photos speak for themselves. Our hotel is in a neighborhood not far from the Arc de Triomphe, and is very charming, with friendly and helpful staff. This is what I saw when I walked out of our hotel my first morning in the city. The Eiffel Tower at night is a wonder to behold! The very top
Photo By Mr. J Barcelona is gorgeous. I'm in love with all that I see, feel, taste, hear and touch. I noticed many women in the city wearing white lace, and when I discovered this lace top at a street vendor located on the La Rambla , I was instantly inspired to make it mine. The architecture is breathtaking. We visited Gaudi's Basilica De La Sagrada Familia. It was an experience that I will never forget. The interior was astounding, and we walked through its grandeur in amazement. The gallant Mr. J outside the Sagrada Familia. Motorcycles and street cafes line
The SC has been dreaming of Paris since the 70's, but fulfilling this wish has been elusive. Nelson and I were planning a trip to Europe in the spring of 2005, before his cancer diagnosis, and medical issues prevented our journey. When the gallant Mr. J invited me to Paris, I was thrilled with the possibility that I would visit the "City of Light" in my lifetime. I recognized this invitation to be of cosmic proportions. Overcoming his cancer diagnosis and thankfully restored to health, we will be leaving tomorrow. I've been involved in a flurry of preparations for our
In my current quest for inner peace, I've been thinking about the concept of empathy, or the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. To be able to walk in someone else's shoes without judgement. It's one of the characteristics of emotional intelligence and a quality that I have worked to develop in myself and admire in others. In graduate school in the early 1970's, I participated in a research project which studied the characteristics of effective therapists. The conclusion of this investigation was that empathy rules. Without it, regardless of modality, technique or school of thought, outcomes
I've talked about City Park before on Style Crone, and today I'm exploring its late summer beauty from a different perspective. Only a half block from my home, I have easy access to breathtaking statuary, sculptures, flower beds, tress, birds and animals. Having worked in emergency mental health for most of my career, by nature my jobs required conversations and interventions with people in crisis, usually having experienced painful and intense traumas. No one crossed my path unless suicidal, homicidal or severely psychotic. I found my patients to be extremely interesting, admired their resilience and spirit, and I was drawn
The SC and Daniel had a disorienting start to our photo shoot this week. We had a confusion about the time and though we had planned to photograph outdoors, it was raining just enough to keep us at home. I felt unsure about my outfit. The under-dress with fishnet woven fabric, providing a lengthening layer to my ensemble, didn't feel like the perfect choice. The lighting in the house was difficult and everything felt a bit "off." All of this was unusual, because without fail our time together flows with magic and fun. Out of frustration, I decided to check
Photo By Assisted Living Staff The SC traveled to Minnesota last week to visit Mom in her assisted living facility. As you can see, she appears as lively and vibrant as she did a year ago HERE, when I visited with Camille. She tells me that when she makes a decision, such as to leaving her home for the assisted living and before that, no longer driving her car, she never looks back but only forward. She states that this is how she continues to feel happy and engaged with life. Mom continues to play bridge and other card
The SC and Daniel set off on another adventure, and landed at Confluence Park HERE , an urban "playground" in Denver's lower downtown area. My ensemble for the day featured polka dots, which made our time together playful and lighthearted. I've found that outfit choices have the ability to change or set a mood. Polka dots have the uncanny power to lift spirits, with their repetitive dots displayed on a background of a range of colors and in this case, white on black accompanied by white on red. My white cropped pants have made frequent appearances this summer, as I continue
The SC and Mr. J traveled to San Francisco last week for a visit with friends, fun, frivolity and a health related appointment on the side. My new strategy for carry-on involves the wearing of scarves as skirts. I have a number of large vintage square silk scarves that I acquired at estate sales, and I can't think of a better way to display their patterns than to wear them over a simple black background. Add a hat and accessories, walking boots that fit for the temperate weather and voila. No need to check a bag! Pocket watches are the
The SC and Daniel traveled to City Park just a block from home to wander its summer vistas, explore the gardens and laugh along the way while taking photos during an overcast July afternoon. I've explored City Park on Style Crone several times over the past years, and today I visit its vast beauty in celebration of my four-year Blogiversary. I can't remember a time when I've composed an outfit in white. Wearing black is an easy background for me to embellish with whatever catches my eye in my closets. It's familiar and comfortable. However, this summer I've noticed a
