Now that The SC is back home in Denver and 2014 is well established, I've been thinking about my goals in life and how to accomplish them. What do I truly want to focus on that will make each day meaningful and closest to what I desire. What do I desire? As I contemplated this question, my outfit for the day began to evolve. The Guess faux fur-trimmed jacket that I purchased at Off Broadway Boutique HERE, just a few steps from where I was staying with my friend in NY, seemed to fit for a day which included newly
After visiting Sue Kreitzman's magical studio and apartment, we gathered at the Rubin Museum HERE Cafe for fun and frivolity, and the privilege of meeting the fabulous blogger from London, Alyson Walsh (on the right) of That's Not My Age HERE. Blogger Carol Markel of Femme et Fleur HERE smiles brightly in the center! Along with Sue Kreitzman, who was leaving for her London home the next morning, we toasted to the celebratory gathering of Wild Old Women (Sue's term) and had a bite to eat, along with libations. Meeting Alyson was a memorable occasion. I've been enamored with
Photo by Carol Markel of Femme et Fleur HERE The SC was thrilled beyond words to accompany Carol Markel and Richard Cramer to Sue Kreitzman's HERE studio and home in the Washington Heights area of NYC on a rainy day, which did nothing to decrease the absolute joy and exhilaration that I felt when I entered Sue's magical world of color and creativity. For the occasion I wore Denise, the hat that I purchased from Carol Markel at her studio earlier in the week. Denise fit right in with the color that surrounded her on this day of her debut.
Several months ago The SC became enthralled with a post that Carol Markel, milliner, artist and blogger extraordinaire published on her blog Femme et Fleur HERE, which previewed her new hats. I couldn't take my eyes off of her remarkable manikin heads, and sent Carol a message asking if they were for sale. I was excited that her answer was "yes," and during my trip to NYC, I purchased one of her manikins from the lovely line-up above. There are some pieces of art that are irresistible! Carol designed this hat shop in a box, and when opened, displays a thrilling
The SC made the decision to spontaneously travel to NYC to finish off 2013 with a spectacular adventure. A message to myself that life is precious and delicious, and to visit the city of dreams because I longed for its energy, its people and the endless opportunities to delight the senses. I had the privilege of hat shopping with Jean and Valerie of the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas, who exquisitely blogged about our time together HERE. Their ability to describe experiences has me feeling as though I'm repeating every detail of this event again in real-time. Who better to hang out with
Happy New Year to all, with love from The Style Crone. The SC prefers feathers to a face lift. Valerie of the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas HERE spotted this hat in a photo of the hat room several months ago, and because of her comments, I decided to start out 2014 with a continuation of my feather 'faze,' and honor the long burnt ostrich allure of this Adolfo II vintage estate sale find. It had never been worn, with its tag from the 1980's hanging from its splendor. Thank you Valerie, for the inspiration! Black and white hat in black and white,
The SC enjoys wearing as much 'resplendent red' as is humanly possible during the holidays. Instead of decorating my home this season, except for a bright fuchsia bow (from the scarf installation) on the front door and a poinsettia in the living room sitting on the round deco blue glass covered table, I've been decorating myself. In the spirit of experimentation, I wanted to focus on spending time with friends and family, so that's where I directed my energy this year. However, I have been admiring the glorious decorations and environments created by the beautiful Tameras of Tamera Beardsley HERE
The SC has a friend that is an ardent Bob Dylan fan and has chosen the artist's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat" from the Blonde on Blonde album as his ringtone. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and this outfit was composed after noticing and taking delight in the sound of an incoming call. The leather jacket has been hanging in my closet for over four years after I purchased it on sale at TJ Maxx. It was the day that my friend and hat shop business partner died, and I was out with a friend, in the dazed state that occurs after loss, randomly
My home is more than a place to live. It's an environment that brings me great pleasure. It surrounds me with its structures of memories and new beginnings. I adorn it as if I were composing an outfit. The dining room's walls are the color of dark red wine and seem to make the food look more luscious during special events. As I gaze around the space, I'm aware that almost everything has had a previous owner. The antique chair, the glass covered deco table, and the hand painted Japanese box were all embraced by others over the years. To
Happy Holidays from Hat Attack! Hope that your Thanksgiving was fabulous and that you are enjoying the season, however you celebrate or not. This vintage felt hat covered in feathers was my choice of the day as I hosted Thanksgiving dinner for family and friends. I have so much to be grateful for and as you can see in the background, my organization has become quite detailed. The shoes are in transparent boxes and I have taken a photo of each lovely pair. The description is also included alongside the photo. Perhaps I've become carried away with my recovery
Cocktail hat, headpiece, fascinator! These words are music to my ears. I love how they perch on the head, with their flirty and fun-loving ways. They serve no function but to top off an outfit with playfulness and whimsy, and only exist for the purpose to adorn and provide self entertainment. I discovered this vintage black velvet cocktail hat trimmed with feathers at an antique market, and out the door with The SC for dinner with a friend it went. One of my favorite things to do! Discovering new restaurants is like theatre and engages the senses. The animated conversation
Fall's colors inspire me and this season rivals spring for my favorite. With an understated brown background, I adorned myself in autumn and embraced the scarf installation for its daily gifts of color and texture. I'm grateful that I'm alive to appreciate the realization of a vision that became a reality in March of 2013 and I enjoy the wall of scarves for its daily greetings and function. It doesn't matter to me if I don't wear every scarf that holds its place in the installation. Although I find them more accessible when they are displayed, the most important factor
Style Crone has brought many wonderful experiences that will remain with me always. Another surprise dropped out of the sky recently, when I received an email that I had been chosen as one of the five people to participate in a PR campaign for Skyestone Denver HERE built by Taylor Morrison HERE (I was not paid for this post). A new development for active seniors, this community will be opening soon, north of Denver adjacent to the breathtaking Flatirons HERE. Since I had forgotten that I had filled out an entry form, this was an unexpected gift and honor. I then
Last weekend The SC was invited by a friend to attend the Mental Health America of Colorado HERE fundraising event, which was held at a downtown hotel. Cocktail attire was requested, which sent me straight to the closet which holds evening wear. It's one of my favorite spots on the face of the earth. I chose the 1920's black silk satin slip dress with beaded sheer overlay, which was purchased at an antique market. The short vintage jacket of layered lace with sheer silk at the neckline was an estate sale find. As I was composing the outfit, which included
Photo By Daniel N This vintage hat with high crown and swooping brim, embellished with pheasant and marabou feathers, caught my eye from its perch high on a shelf in the hat room. It was of course purchased at an estate sale years ago. It was last worn at a dear friend's birthday party, feathers flying on the dance floor. Today, November 1st, is Nelson's birthday. To have been well-loved and to have loved with all of my heart allows me to live my life to the fullest in this place in time. I cherish my memories, moving forward, as
On a cool but sunny Colorado afternoon, The SC and Diana took a stroll around the block. For the occasion I wore a piece that caught my eye at an estate sale this past summer. Made in Israel, it was a sleeper until I tried it on; the unique sleeves are what made me fall in love. And the round piece of blue glass hanging from the zipper. The tree in front of the neighbor's home to the north is always one of my fall favorites. It's leaves turn a brilliant shade of red in October, and the tree
When I first laid eyes upon this dreamy creamy 60's dress at The Vintage Studio HERE in Minneapolis several months ago, I was fascinated by the color, the drape and the shape, and most of all, the hood which fell as a cowl around my neck. It was love at first sight, and I knew it would accompany me home. I wore this piece of history for the first time out to lunch with a dear friend for her birthday. Choosing the hat took some time as I wandered through the hat room in search of the perfect chapeau. As
I'm happy to be home, even though the Denver Discoveries Series was invigorating and I learned more about the city I live in by preparing posts about some of my favorite spots. I love going up and down the wooden steps between the first and second floors and taking in the dancers that populate the walls on the staircase. A sketch of dance icon Judith Jamison, former director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company HERE, gracefully adorns the wall behind me, inspiring me daily with her dramatic and artful beauty. My home makes me feel warm and supported; a structure has
The lovely Diana and The SC made a visit to City Park HERE, the largest park in Denver, which is less than a block from my home. I consider it my back yard and the area of the Pavilion HERE, Sopris Gardens and the Bandshell HERE hold my history within its boundaries. It's the end of the summer and the Discovering Denver Series has its last episode. It is fitting to close in a location dear to my heart. The back of the Pavilion in the midst of Sopris Gardens. And to think that this grandeur is available to The SC
When Diana called last Sunday evening to invite The SC to a concert by a young man from England who would be playing at the Ogden Theatre on Monday, the following evening, I said 'yes' even before I knew that the outfit theme would be leopard! Without knowing the musician or the details, the thought of a spontaneous adventure in Capitol Hill was intriguing and I instantly knew that I was on board. Capitol Hill HERE is a neighborhood that borders downtown Denver, is diverse and densely populated, and its eclectic architeture is a feast for the eyes. My own
