Last week Jean of Dross Into Gold HERE flew into Denver for her annual visit. Her husband Joey Sommerville HERE was scheduled to perform at the Keystone Wine and Jazz Festival HERE and she arrived a few days early so that we could play. Play to us means hitting the thrift shops, estate sales and consignment stores. We discovered treasures at every destination! Jean's visit coincided with Daniel's return as Style Crone photographer, so there was much to celebrate. Our photo shoot took place in Keystone following Joey's show-stopping performance. Keystone, Colorado HERE is a resort town with breathtaking mountain views.
Daniel is making a speedy recovery following his life saving surgery and near death experience. He's resting up for our next photo shoot, so for this post, Finn Wells is filling in. Finn is also going to help us with videos, so I look forward to exploring a new medium. The fear of losing Daniel was heightened by the death of a much younger and apparently healthy friend who died in his sleep this past weekend. A talented, creative and generous artist slipped away in the midst of the night. This all against the backdrop of unspeakable gun violence and
This one is for Daniel, who is in the midst of a lifesaving unplanned surgery today. All my thoughts and best wishes are with him as I write this post. It's the third anniversary of Hat Attack and every photo for this monthly series was taken by Daniel. I'm constantly grateful for our ongoing collaboration, and look forward to his speedy return. Daniel requests that the show must go on, so Mr. J, my trusty iPhone and my wrinkled white linen tunic traveled with me to the periphery of the Denver Botanic Gardens to honor him and our monthly ritual
This past October my hair stylist retired. She had been cutting and coloring my hair for many years. She had been supportive of my decision to grow my hair out from red to silver and I was close to the very end of this process when she left. I was saddened by the loss, but celebrated the new life that she had before her. I came to accept this change and began to explore options for her replacement. Making a long magical story short (beginning with my nail whisperer), I discovered Charlie Price HERE, artist extraordinaire. He felt like the
I was going to post yesterday, but my heart was heavy with grief as the reality of the Orlando atrocity hovered with horror. These photos were taken before the shootings, and they didn't mirror how I felt. My deep sorrow for the victims and their families was at the forefront and I wanted to honor the pain of their trauma. Today I see the wisdom of moving forward and exploring how I can, in some small way, become involved in a movement to contribute to the prevention of this senseless violence. Actions speak louder than words and the place to
Over a month ago my friend Brooks Luby, Denver fashion designer of Brooks LTD HERE, asked me to participate in a photo shoot, representing her focus on mother-of-the-bride and special occasion pieces. I was all in! I'm always ready for a new experience of interest which allows me to stretch and grow. The shoot took place in her beautiful studio in the heart of Denver's LoDo district. For this post I chose my favorite editorial photos by photographer Hardy Klahold HERE, wearing pieces created by Brooks. The above white shirt with open shoulders and lace detail is now hanging in my
June's Hat Attack was created by artist, milliner and blogger Carol Markel of Femme et Fleur HERE. This colorful fedora accompanied me back to Denver after my most recent visit to NYC. I've worn Carol's hats before on Style Crone, but this chapeau deserved it's very own feature on Hat Attack. The magnificent colors and shapes that adorn this hat were irresistible to me, and I happened to find a vintage neon pink jacket in my closet that could accessorize its strength. This hat is the main event! Photos By Daniel Thank you to Deborah Boland for featuring Style Crone
Photo By Ari Seth Cohen My magical NYC adventure comes to a close in today's post. Thank you to the brilliant Ari Seth Cohen for the feature on Advanced Style HERE. I was thrilled for the honor. My vintage long green satin jacket from Meek Vintage Denver HERE is perfect for twirling, topped off with my gifted vintage Schiaparelli turban. The Chanel bag was a recent yard sale find! On my last day in NYC I had the great honor of attending the press preview for MANUS X MACHINA: Fashion in an Age of Technology at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was invited to this event by my dear friends Jean And Valerie of the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas. Read their beautifully written and knowledgeable review of the exhibit HERE. In the photo above, which was taken by Jill Krementz of the New York Social Diary HERE, (left to right) Jean wears a straw hat designed by Ignatius from the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Craft Show, Valerie wears a pale green
Photo By Daniel The book launch for blogger, author and documentarian Ari Seth Cohen's new book Advanced Style: Older and Wiser HERE took place on Tuesday, April 26th at Strand Bookstore HERE in NYC. Not wanting to miss this exciting event, Mr J, Daniel and I traveled to NY. The evening was even more amazing than we expected! Photo By Daniel With the gorgeous Valerie Von Sobel HERE on the cover, the book exceeds all expectations. The pages are filled with inspiring images of stylish men and women from across the globe. Ari continues to change the perception of older people with his photography
May's Hat Attack is a headpiece created by Heather Stoten of The Hat Workshop HERE in Boulder, Colorado. I've blogged about Heather's fine millinery couture before on Style Crone, and a recent trip to her studio revealed this beautiful silk organza ruffle hat which immediately landed on my head. I've also written about how I don't have to possess every stunning piece of headwear that I meet in my travels! Wearing it briefly and documenting the experience with a photo can be enough. And featuring its beauty on Hat Attack is frosting, which I can taste again. And again. By pulling
Every Saturday Mr J and I go out for breakfast, and for months we have made a ritual of shooting photos for Instagram as part of our weekend. During the week I search out backgrounds as I drive through the city, and If I don't have a location in mind by Saturday, there is spontaneity. Something always pops up that catches my eye. The pale blue hat in the photo above was created by the talented Juliane Gorman of Felt Happiness HERE. This weekend morning interlude sparks my creativity in a new way, and is a practice in playful interaction
In the past on Style Crone I've written about the importance of health and how it's my number one priority. I structure and weave my time around physical, emotional and mental self-care. However, no matter how much energy I put into creating a healthy lifestyle for myself, some things are beyond my control. I received the diagnosis of osteoporosis many years ago, and have tried several options to improve my bone density. However, my most recent numbers were disturbing and I know that I must do something more proactive to prevent fractures in the future. I'm researching and consulting with
Yoga is a component of the scaffolding of my life. It's as nourishing as the food that I eat. As restorative as sleep. As healing as the soothing presence of an empathetic friend. Yoga removes internal barriers and opens creative channels in my brain. It's the place where ideas for blog posts and outfits are born. It provides an opening for allowing the art of "letting go" of that which I cannot control, as I focus on the breath and the mindful awareness of a space in time. Over the years I've learned that however I'm feeling when I enter
April's Hat Attack was discovered in a vintage shop in Jerome, Arizona during my trip to Sedona in January. I was captivated by its intricate floral display in shades of blue and lavender, trimmed with a purple velvet ribbon. It represents the beginning of spring, with its whimsical bouquet. Though snow remains in Denver's City Park, a few flowering trees are beginning to reveal their first hint of spring's brilliant show. April's chapeau is an announcement of this year's season of renewal and new beginnings! Last week I learned that Style Crone had been hacked. I wouldn't have known but for a caring email from the fabulous blogger Alyson of That's Not My Age HERE, who noticed that when attempting to access my blog, she was diverted to an offensive site. I'm not sure how long this had been going on, and was horrified that it was happening. It felt invasive and out of control, and I immediately called the site which hosts my blog. After many days and hours of talking with the helpful and concerned staff at the hosting site, everything seems to
Every birthday offers a transition into a new era! Similar to passing through the New Year every January 1st, I feel an awakening that offers hope and renewal. I don't make resolutions or set in place a plan for the next 12 months, but I have been known to throw a huge party or travel to a location that is meaningful to me. It's the only day of the year that belongs just to me, and I love to celebrate with family and loved ones, creating memories that will be with me for a lifetime. This year was relatively quiet

Thank you to all of my followers and those who comment on Style Crone! Wearing vintage Norma Kamali leopard print cotton jacket. I am honored and thrilled to be included in the CNN website's piece on Ari Seth Cohen and his new book, Advanced Style: Older And Wiser HERE. The book will be out on April 26th, and is now available for preorder HERE. Linking up with Patti’s Visible Monday HERE at
Last week my beloved daughter Camille gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, Cameron Nelson. Her husband Sean and I were present, and active participants in the extraordinary process of the arrival of new life into the world. I watched Camille with a sense of wonder, as she navigated the precarious waters of labor and welcomed her new son into her arms with her eyes wide and adoring. Her first words were, "He's perfect." And that he is. The moment of birth radiates with electric energy. Observing the first breath of life is as intimate as being present for the
The March Hat Attack was discovered at Papillion Vintage in Jerome, Arizona. It's blue velvet fabric covers blocked buckram, and the bow in the back makes for a great exit. Blue is one of my favorite colors, and I decided to go monochromatic. There's no such thing as an overdose of cobalt blue! Photos By Daniel Linking up with Patti’s Visible Monday HERE, Catherine’s #iwillwearwhatilike HERE, and Cherie’s Shoe and Tell HERE. Now it’s your turn to throw a little headwear love my way! Please display your hat, headwrap, headscarf, headpiece, fascinator, hair flower, headband or other adornment for your head
