During my most recent trip to Arizona I discovered this orange leather jacket at an estate sale. Like hats, I seem to find signs to my favorite shopping destination sprinkled across the landscape no matter the geographic location. I fell in love with everything about this jacket, but upon reading the Sunday New York Times Magazine on February 2nd, I learned that no amount of orange could change the fact that older women are not "seen" in our culture. The piece on "Erasure" HERE by Parul Sehgal HERE, an editor at The New York Times Book Review, had me with
On what felt like the coldest day of the year, Daniel and I traveled to Congress Park HERE, an area of Denver not far from my home. The day was overcast and gray and the newly fallen snow covered the ground as far as the eye could see. In an effort to stay warm, I ran through the snow in my boots, enveloped in layers covered by the colorful vintage maxi coat gifted by a friend many years ago. She found this vintage beauty hanging on her dumpster, and generously offered it to me, knowing that I would give it new
Before leaving for Sedona, I received a message from a friend and former co-worker about the death of the wife of a mutual colleague from the past. I put off the decision regarding my attendance at the memorial service until I returned from our trip. When I woke up on the morning of the funeral, I knew that I wanted to attend. And I'm glad that I did. I remembered clearly how important and comforting it was for me during my winter of grief, to have people show up from different eras of my life at a time of overwhelming
February's Hat Attack features a vintage Norma Kamali baby leopard print toque with matching gauntlets. These pieces were "seized" from my hat shop in the 1980's and they traveled with me on my recent trip to Sedona. I decided that they needed to be focused upon more fully after I fell in love with them once again. They hadn't been on an outing for years and are now having a revival! I love hats that are "shape changers" and can present as different personalities on a whim. This Norma Kamali beauty transforms from toque to beret at the drop of
For years I've heard stories about the beauty and the vortex energy centers of Sedona, Arizona HERE. Believing that there's never a better time than now, Mr J and I left for a short stay in one of the most stunning places in the country. To celebrate my first visit to this location with breathtaking views, I chose to wear animal print, which always has a way of enhancing any experience. Daniel suggested that we check out the landscape at sunset from the site of the Sedona Airport. I had no idea that my tiger print coat would reflect the
Daniel's back! And off to City Park we went, in our usual festive mood when we're engaged with photography, laughing and amusing ourselves with inside jokes. It may be January, with its cold and snowy background, but I feel exhilarated and energized by the chill in the air and the stark beauty of winter. The news of my daughter Camille's pregnancy has been coloring my days since she announced this news months ago. Married in May and pregnant in June! We've been happily preparing ever since! The very end of February is the date of the arrival of new life.
Daniel's 103 year old mother died on New Year's Eve Day. In honor of her indomitable spirit, I threw on my New Year's Eve outfit and Mr. J and I traveled to the "Empathy" mural not far from my home. I've blogged about empathy before. About its power to enhance relationships and provide the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. About its capacity to facilitate healing during times of grief and loss. I dedicate this post to my friend and photographer Daniel and to his mother Dora, who has over the years impressed me with her life's
January's Hat Attack is a vintage fur felt chapeau with felt bow and trim by French designer Marcelle Agrellet, which was discovered at Fabulous Fannys HERE several years ago in NYC when shopping with Jean and Valerie of the Idiosyncratic Fashionistas HERE. Photos By Daniel The days have grown bitter cold, and sometimes grey without the brilliant light of the Colorado sun. The perfect time to wear my warmest hats and coats, and the multiple layers that offer protection from winter's stark presence. The beauty of every season can be more fully valued beneath a brim. I'm greeting 2016 "Hat On"
Photo By Daniel Daniel and The SC spent many hours together during the year, creating photos for Style Crone and learning through new experiences. Sometimes we discovered sites in Denver that provided interesting backgrounds or we stayed close to home. The location didn't matter! Rather, it was the fun and laughter that sparked our creativity. Thank you Daniel, for another year of glorious good times! This post will revisit a few of the highlights on Style Crone that made my life sing in 2015. Photo By Mr J Mr J and The SC began the year in Miami, enjoying the
Dan's back and his mother is doing better. He comes from resilience and longevity, and he brought all of that energy to our journey to the periphery of the Denver Botanic Gardens HERE on the day following a snow storm and a brief cold spell. The temperature allowed for the uncovering of layers in winter. I chose to wear the black vintage hat that I discovered at Off Broadway, the NYC boutique that was owned by the incredible Lynn Dell Cohen, featured many times on Ari Seth Cohen's Advanced Style HERE, who died this past year. The drapey skirt that
Over the past weeks my photographer Daniel has been spending precious time with his 103 year old mother who has been admitted to hospice in Wisconsin. My thoughts have been with him frequently as he moves through this painful and difficult process. I miss him as a friend and as the talented artist that I collaborate with weekly. However, the show must go on, and my daughter Camille was kind enough to join me at the new Wizard's Chest HERE, which opened recently at a new location. With phone in hand, she shot photos for today's post, as we took
Several months ago I was introduced by Debra Rapoport HERE to This Chair Rocks HERE, the site by the brilliant Ashton Applewhite. "Pushing back against agesim - which affects everyone," is the motto on her site header. This Chair Rocks includes the blog, Yo, Is This Ageist? HERE which has me critiquing commercials, the language that I hear in my environment and my own internal dialogue. I have become captivated by everything that Ashton writes and it has energized me in new and intriguing ways. Though I am familiar with ageism, This Chair Rocks introduces a movement that sits so comfortably and resonates with
December's Hat Attack spends its days on the mantel, above the fireplace in my home. Why keep beauty hidden in a box when it can be on display? It was purchased at The Hat Shop NYC HERE in the late 90's, and I love its wispy feathers and compelling mix of greens. Headpiece, fascinator, holiday ornament. The term or category used to describe this piece is insignificant. The importance lies in its allure and how it makes me feel when I glance daily at its playful splendor. Why save that rich experience for special occasions? Especially when the starkness of
Turbans! I don't know when it happened. When I first became enthralled with their tantalizing appeal. Suddenly I realized that I had been captured by their allure, and that it had been going on for some time. I tend toward the vertical with my headwear and I love the height and versatility of a turban or headwrap. Not that I don't adore brims and a multitude of shapes when I'm scanning for a crone crown. But at this point in my life, turbans catch my attention in a heartbeat. But then I've had headwear crushes before! The turban that I
Writing this post has been difficult and it's not what I had planned. The horrors of violence and suffering in Paris, Beirut and around the world have intermittently immobilized me over the past several days. How could I possibly write about hair and other topics of relative insignificance? How could I publish photos of a smiling face, when I have felt a range of emotions that have included sadness and grief, accompanied by confusion and disbelief? So many people have been victimized, here in the United States and across the planet. There seems to be no end to the trauma,
The falling leaves in City Park surround me, as autumn in its fullness announces a new era. The change of seasons always brings with it a release of the old and a step into the unfamiliar. This year I'm letting go of the "red" that has been my hair color of choice for 22 years. I've been surprised by the ease with which this transition has evolved. The weekly transformation has provided self entertainment and the sensation of wonder. I've felt welcoming of the emergence of silver and the honoring of aging that it represents to me. Sometimes I see
November's Hat Attack features a vintage floppy brimmed leopard print fur felt hat by Adolpho, which I purchased for next to nothing at the thrift shop Second Debut HERE during my recent visit to Minneapolis. Though I have many animal print hats in residence in the hat room, this beauty is completely different from anything in my current collection. I love peering from beneath its sweeping brim, blocking or viewing a perspective on a whim. How could I resist its compelling splendor? Photos By Daniel I plan to wear it to lunch with a friend this week so that it
The beautiful and vibrant Sylvia of 40+Style HERE visited Denver in August, and I was fortunate to meet this dynamic and influential blogger and spend an entire day with her. Though our visit took place two months ago, the importance of her presence in my life has not waned. A highlight of my summer, the time spent with this accomplished woman resonates as I write this post today. Sylvia blogged about our meetup on 40+Style HERE and in the photo above, she "owns" the scarf installation in my home. I met Sylvia through blogging shortly after I launched Style Crone, and
Debra Rapoport, visual/performance artist and hat maker HERE and regular on Ari Seth Cohen's blog Advanced Style HERE traveled to Denver with her partner Stan Satlin for the opening reception of Susan Wick's show at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, "Wild Women Never Get The Blues." Susan's show was featured on my post of last week HERE. Together we decided to organize two events to take place during the time of her visit. Hence, the "Cuffs" workshop was born! For the event Debra wears a hat which she created from Viva paper towels and a thrifted sweater, accessorized by handmade and thrifted
Susan Wick: Wild Women Never Get the Blues opened at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art HERE, with a reception on October 1st, and runs through January 3rd, 2016. I attended the opening, accompanied by friends, and was mesmerized by the exhibit which fills the entire museum with its creative and inspiring displays of Susan's art. Susan was surrounded by the admiring crowd who gathered to attended the event, including her partner of many years, Micky Zeppelin HERE. Their smiles were contagious and reflected the energy that was present and available for all to enjoy during the evening's celebration. The back of
