Photo by Daniel N The Style Crone is kicking off the Holiday Hat Revue with this vintage pillbox lavished by red and green feathers, which was purchased at an estate sale many years ago. It usually has an outing during the holiday season and this year will not be an exception. I love how the feathers fringe the face, engaging in parallel play with The SC's hair.
Photo by Nelson Red beret and neckwarmer with rose-NYC hat shop, red knit fingerless gloves-flea market, long black/white herringbone coat with belt-estate sale, ankle boots-consignment store. The CT scan was unremarkable, but Nelson's liver function lab values and tumor markers continue to rise. "Sort of" good news was the response of one of my friends when I described the situation. Nelson could not receive chemo again today because of his lab values, and more physician consults are in our near future. Not exactly the holiday gift we were hoping for, but "The Emperor of All Maladies" is in charge. It
Photo by Dorothy Off to the Kinetic Fitness Studio's holiday party, and we were dancing! Dancing like we've done so many times before and it was heavenly. Nelson's eyes were sparkling as brightly as my rhinestone jacket. The plant behind Nelson's head in this photo could serve either as a halo or dreadlocks. Both possibilities work for The SC. And we didn't think about CT scan results for even a second!
Photo by Nelson Vintage '80's red hat with veil and vintage red/black gloves-estate sales, black patent leather boots-yard sale, black jacket-consignment store. And let the festive holiday party season begin!
Photo by The Style Crone Just before Thanksgiving at Whole Foods The SC saw this woman working check out in this absolutely fabulous headwear creation. I left without taking a photo and thought I had missed the moment. Then I had a second chance and could hardly believe my good fortune. Just the other day she was wearing the headwear again and she gave me permission to take her photo. A Whole Foods cocktail hat designed for the holidays with coupons, ribbons and bows! I salute her creativity and sense of style. I've never had so much fun checking out
Photo by Jackie Waiting for the results from Nelson's most recent CT scan which was done two days ago creates familiar anxiety. We know the drill and in the past we would make the necessary amount of frantic phone calls to get the results as soon as possible. That type of energy seems to have transformed and instead The SC keeps as busy as possible during the waiting period. Dr Keith Block, integrative oncologist and director of the Block Medical Center in Chicago states that the time intervals between scans and results are some of the most stressful elements of
Photos by The Style Crone A few favorites from the "Notorious & Notable 20th Century Women of Style" exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York! The last photo is Bette Midler's mermaid costume. The exhibit was fun, entertaining, a riot of color and a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Photo by Jackie There have been questions about the origin of this colorful and unique vintage coat that The SC wore on Advanced Style. So here's the story. A friend found the coat hanging on a dumpster several years ago, and The Style Crone was generously gifted with this work of art. I have been forced to wear it ever since and sometimes I hang it in the door frame of the hat room to view frequently for entertainment and pleasure. Treasures can be found anywhere at any time if we keep our eyes open and dumpster diving cannot be
Photos by Ari Seth Cohen Ari Seth Cohen at Advanced Style recently featured DJ Mamy Rock, who performs at clubs around the world and is the perfect example of creative self expression. This all began after she went to a disco in London with her grandson. How exciting and inspiring to see this woman manifest an idea to the nines. Check out more photos and videos of this amazing woman at Advanced Style. And lets keep dancing!
Photo by Nelson "Watch and wait" turns into an acute situation as Nelson's clot becomes more complicated. We try to do everything possible within our control to be healthy, but when cancer calls, we stop everything and listen. Listening for what I'm not sure. Listening because of fear, because of uncertainty, because of its power? Nelson is reading the book The Emperor of All Maladies, A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee; cancer is described as "an infinitely resourceful adversary." When it comes right down to it, we realize that we cannot cure or control this disease. Cancer IS
Photo by The Style Crone Celebratory leopard print!
Photo by Nelson Vintage 'Neusteter's' camel jacket with leopard print buttons and vintage leopard print earrings-estate sales, Donald Pliner leopard print boots-consignment store, jeans-Buffalo Exchange, Hortensia black knit cap-The Hat Shop. Nelson chose to have three weeks between chemo treatments because he didn't want to be carrying a chemo pump on Thanksgiving Day. Not a celebratory accessory! However, leopard print is always a celebratory adornment to accompany us back to the 'front', and there are new mysteries to be investigated. Nelson is receiving only one chemo drug today because his liver lab values continue to increase. The suspicion is that one of
Photo by Jackie Spending a day with Camille in NYC is a harmonious dream come true. Our daughter knows the city like the back of her hand and we progressed from one spectacular experience to the next with ease. On Saturday we had lunch in Chelsea followed by lattes at Cafe Grumpy, visited Camille's client in her beautiful home, hit The Hat Shop in SoHo, visited dear friends in Tribeca, had dinner at her friend's new wine bar in the West Village, went to "The Scottsboro Boys" on Broadway, and danced til 1 am at her friend's birthday party at
Photos by The Style Crone The Style Crone spent over two hours in Tziporah Salamon's apartment in NYC as she put together about 10 outfits before my very eyes with a "museum worthy collection of antique treasures." The above photos depict four examples of the ensembles that Tziporah built during her seminar. As per the description of her tutorial, "She used her extensive wardrobe to demonstrate dressing as an art form." I was transfixed as I watched the magic performed before me in the midst of a room beautifully decorated with a number of perfectly displayed precious objects. Every elegant
Photos by Jackie I wore a 1900 Chinese silk dragon wedding skirt that I purchased at an estate sale when I attended Tziporah Salamon's seminar in her apartment on the Upper West Side. Come to find out, Tziporah had several Chinese skirts in her inventory and the variety and embroidery were astounding. Another exquisite memory to store and pull up during stressful times, when storms sweep through life with fierce intensity. I think it's important to accumulate as many magnificent and beautiful memories in one's brain as is humanly possible!
Photo by The Style Crone The Style Crone stayed with Jackie in her apartment on the Upper West Side during her NYC visit. Having a place to stay in NY is a true and generous GIFT! And she took so many photos that Nelson feared he was losing his job as the official Style Crone photographer. Here she is looking stunning in orange, white, and black as I caught her going out the door to work on Monday morning. I met Jackie through my dear friend Linda, who is pictured above. Jackie and Linda have known each other since the
Photo by Camille Happy Thanksgiving from The Style Crone and 'silk satin' greetings from the appetizer area. We have much to be thankful for. The results of Nelson's scans are negative, so the cause of the abnormal lab values is unclear. The mystery continues, but for today we rejoice in the gathering of family and friends and live in the moment of celebration. I am grateful for everyone that I have met in the blogging 'world' over the past several months. Thank you for checking in, your comments, and all that you give. This has been a life enhancing experience!
Photo by The Style Crone Ari Seth Cohen and Debra Rapoport from Advanced Style, NYC.
Photos by Ari Seth Cohen This past Friday in NYC I met Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style, a blog about stylish and creative older people, and Debra Rapoport, who has a page on Advanced Style. I have admired Ari's blog for many months, and I've featured the inspirational Debra Rapoport several times on Style Crone. Following Advanced Style was influential in the process of launching Style Crone, so meeting Ari and Debra in person was a high point of my NYC visit! We playfully roamed the streets and rode the bus as Ari took photos of fascinating people along
Photo by The Style Crone Home from NYC with many tales to tell and too tired to tell them. But I will start with this photo taken at the "Notorious & Notable 20th Century Women of Style" exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York. This dress was worn by Carmen de Lavallade, dancer, choreographer, professor, stage and film actress. Stunning beyond belief and a very good place to start!
