Recently I experienced the magical holiday event that is Camp Christmas, which takes place at Heritage Lakewood Bellmar Park (801 S Yarrow St, Lakewood, CO 80226). The camp is primarily outdoors, with several opportunities to visit decked-out indoor displays (and warm up!) throughout. Camp Christmas is presented by Hanzon Studios and DCPA Off-Center, and created by the brilliant artist Lonnie Hanzon. Journey through a fantastical wonderland of lights, dazzling decorations, music, and memorabilia as you explore mesmerizing yuletide scenes spread across a six-acre landscape. The final day of Camp Christmas is January 2nd, 2022, and is not to be missed.

I have known Lonnie since 1982, when he sold his incredible jewelry in my hat shop. We have remained friends and I admire all that he creates and brings to life. As quoted below from the Camp Christmas website, it is “The highlight of the holiday season.”

Camp Christmas feels like a present itself, from Lakewood to its neighbors, from quirky Lonnie Hanzon to all of Colorado. It’s whacky and warm, gooey but sophisticated, retro and very real.”

“The most ‘extra’ Christmas event in town… magical.”

The “highlight of the holiday season. A must-see for all ages.”

Below I have included photos of my journey through Camp Christmas, which do not fully capture the experience of its magic and creativity. Seeing it in person is the only way to fully appreciate its brilliance.

The “present” room is overflowing with beautifully wrapped gifts.

The holiday historical room is breathtaking!

Don’t forget to check out the fairy room!

I laughed out loud when I discovered the “Emotional Baggage Check.” I immediately grabbed the hat box of shame. The abandonment baggage was off to the side, portraying a wicked sense of humor.

The overall message of Camp Christmas!

The beauty parlor was one of my favorite rooms. It included headwear, so you can imagine my delight.

The pink room altered my reality. Everything was seen through pink colored glasses.

I can’t even tell you how many beautifully decorated Christmas trees were everywhere throughout the camp. Each one more stunning than the last!

Christmas tree!

And another Christmas tree!

Santa’s chair was a child’s (and adult’s) delight.

I always enjoy a great stage!

Who can resit a merry-go-round.

The light show is magical, and though I was present before sunset, it was apparent that in the dark it would be magnificent! Daniel and I had the time of our holiday lives!

I wore a vintage red maxi coat trimmed with black velvet, hat by Cha Cha’s House, and vintage velvet gloves. It was my most festive ensemble of the season!
